WELCOME

The Portuguese Professional Association of Archaeologists (APA) is a private organization that represents archaeologists working in Portugal. It was created in December 1992 in the city of Porto and integrates individuals who are professional archaeologists.

Among other functions, the Association aims to contribute to the protection, study, valuation and diffusion of archaeological heritage and promote the profession’s dignity and prestige and the archaeologist’s social function. One of the fundamental aspects of the Association practice is to defend the profession’s ethical values, particularly those enrolled in the APA’s Code of Ethics, which all associates must observe.

Furthermore, the Association intervenes publicly on subjects and events that are relevant to the practice of Archaeology and to the archaeological heritage, being an interlocutor with other spheres of activity and public organizations. Another concern is the professional and scientific enrichment of their associates through training and diffusion.

The Portuguese Professional Association of Archaeologists is also working on a project of transformation into a public organization, i.e., the Portuguese Council of Archaeologists.
